Felix, who came up through the ranks at Benfica as a teenager, earned a transfer to Atletico Madrid in 2019 after scoring 20 goals in 43 games in his first season with the Portuguese powerhouses, stats that caught the attention of all the major football leagues around the world.
Felix's talents have also allowed him to break into the Portugal team, where he has scored three times, despite the fact that he has not produced those kinds of numbers while playing for Atletico. He has become a significant part of the Spanish team.
Felix put up an outstanding display in Portugal's 6-1 victory against Switzerland, assisting on two goals, but there is still much uncertainty about his future at Madrid.
The 23-year-old has started just one league game for Diego Simeone’s side since the start of September and Gil Marin says the “world-class” talent could move on next year.
Gil Marin told TVE: “I think he is a top world-class player, but because of the relationship with the coach, his playing time, his motivation… it’d be reasonable to analyze an option for him to depart if one arrives.
“It’s reasonable to think that he might leave, although I’d love him to stay. But, that’s not the player’s plan.”
The claims come after Diego Forlan encouraged the attacker to leave Madrid: “Joao Felix is a very good player, he is young and has a lot of quality,” Forlan told reporters.
“They paid a lot of money for him and he has not been playing as expected, but he is still very young.
“There are reports coming out about the possibility of him leaving Atletico and, if he leaves, he could even increase his performance.
“I believe in that. It happens a lot. It happened, for example, with Philippe Coutinho, who played very little at Inter and when he went to Liverpool he improved a lot.”
