Premier League rivalry is no stranger to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who has seen it firsthand.
In 2004, former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho made many attempts to persuade Gerrard to leave his childhood club for Stamford Bridge, but the Reds captain ultimately chose to remain at Anfield weeks after winning the UEFA Champions League in 2005. With Mason Mount's contract at Stamford Bridge expiring and rumors that Liverpool are interested in signing the 23-year-old, he may find himself in a similar situation to Steven Gerrard.
Since making his senior team debut at Chelsea, the midfielder for the Blues has constantly been a vital player for many coaches. Football.london is aware of one of the crucial elements influencing talks between Mount and the club over a new contract is the length of the new deal being offered
Talks between the two parties have now paused until after the World Cup, with Mount featuring in Gareth Southgate's 26-man squad in Qatar. Chelsea remain confident the English midfielder will sign a new deal after both the player and club came away from the latest round of negotiations feeling positive that an agreement can be met, but clubs are enquiring as to whether the England international could be lured away in the future.
Gerrard has outlined in the past why Todd Boehly needs to tie Mount down to a new long-term deal, with interest from Liverpool and Juventus increasing as his contract situation drags on. The Reds legend admitted: "I'm a massive fan of Mason.
"I've watched his [Mount] progress – of course I have. He's a big talent for the country.
"He plays with a smile on his face. He can create, he can score, and he's already a European Cup winner, so I don't think he needs the likes of myself to big him up or praise him. But I must say I'm a fan."
Mount enjoyed his best season at his boyhood club last term, registering 10 goals and 11 assists in 32 matches to help the Blues qualify for Champions League football. The Chelsea star struggled to replicate his brilliant form at the start of the 2022/23 campaign but has shown signs under Graham Potter that he is back to his best, despite the Blues languishing down in eighth place in the Premier League table heading into the World Cup break.
