Chelsea are reportedly in touch with Juventus’ central defender Matthijs de Ligt

The west Londoners remain eager to reinforce their defence next summer’s transfer market, amid concerns over the long-term future of a few of the first-team stars.

Both Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger are in the final year of their existing deals and are yet to pen an extension.

Thiago Silva’s current deal also expires next year, and the Brazilian star is expected to leave Stamford Bridge.

The Blues were very close to acquiring the services of Jules Kounde in the summer before the deal broke down in the final stage of talks.

They remain interested in the France international but it is becoming increasingly clear that prising the player away from Sevilla will be an easy task.

Thomas Tuchel has now switched his attention to other defenders and wants to add Matthijs to his roster.

The Dutch youngster joined I Bianconeri in 2019 but has failed to hold on to a senior team place in Turin.

Recent reports say De Ligt is unsettled with the Serie A giants and wants to secure a transfer away from the club. The Old Lady are willing to let the ace leave for a suitable offer.

Chelsea are poised to take advantage of the current situation but might have to break the bank to step up the Netherlands international.
