Paul Merson agrees with Thomas Tuchel on Chelsea controversy during Southampton win

Paul Merson agrees with Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel that Timo Werner's goal against Southampton should have stood at Stamford Bridge

Thomas Tuchel was left angry and confused after Timo Werner had a goal ruled out in Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Southampton on Saturday.

Trevor Chalobah had opened the scoring for Tuchel’s side and Werner looked to have doubled Chelsea’s lead just before half-time, only for VAR to rule out the strike as Cesar Azpilicueta was adjudged to have fouled Kyle Walker-Peters in the build-up.

Southampton levelled things up after the break, with James Ward-Prowse scoring from the penalty spot, after Ben Chilwell fouled Tino Livramento, but the Saints’ captain was later sent off for a tackle on Jorginho.

Chelsea took the initiative, with late goals from Werner and Chilwell securing a hard-fought victory at Stamford Bridge.

Among all the chaos, Werner’s disallowed goal was one of the main talking points of the match, with home fans booing referee Martin Atkinson and the rest of the officials at half-time in response to their decision

Tuchel was especially incensed by the incident, with the German coach even getting booked by Atkinson for his outburst on the touchline.
