Chelsea is getting closer to signing midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Benfica, and their buying frenzy in January shows no signs of stopping down.
Simon Phillips claims that the Blues are making every effort to complete a deal for the 22-year-old, who shone for World Cup champions Argentina in Qatar.
Chelsea could release the South American's release clause and pay up to £106 million (€120 million) for him.
Chelsea, which is owned by American entrepreneur Todd Boehly, have already spent a fortune this month.
Mykhailo Mudryk of Ukraine, a winger for Shakhtar Donetsk, cost them £88.5 million; Benoit Badiashile, another £35 million; Noni Madueke, another £29 million; and Malo Gusto, another £26.3 million.
Moreover, they brought in Andrey Santos and David Datro Fofana for undisclosed fees and splashed out £9.7 million to sign Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix on loan until the end of the season.
Chelsea have shattered records with their spending since the summer and the big-money acquisition of Fernandez would inevitably lead to further questions being asked.
A report in the Daily Mail last week claimed that UEFA are set to close a loophole which has enabled Chelsea to spread the cost of their record transfer spending over up to eight years.
The same outlet revealed that a number of Chelsea’s Premier League rivals have accused the club of attempting to cheat FFP regulations.
