What Thomas Tuchel did to Timo Werner and a message to Havertz and Ziyech as Chelsea bounce back

Here are our talking points from the Blues' 3-1 win over Southampton that saw them head to the summit of the Premier League table

Back to winning ways for Chelsea

Did the 3-1 scoreline flatter the Blues? Perhaps a little bit as Southampton proved more than a match for the reigning European champions in the second half but eventually Chelsea’s strength - and a red card - saw them to victory in a rain-soaked west London.

Chelsea took the lead through Trevoh Chalobah’s eighth-minute header and it looked as though they could cruise away from a winless Southampton side so far this season but that wasn’t the case.

VAR didn’t help the cause when Timo Werner had a goal ruled out for the 16th time in his Chelsea career after heading home Callum Hudson-Odoi’s cross. Romelu Lukaku also had a strike ruled out, rightly, for offside as his goalless run stretched to five games.

James Ward-Prowse levelled from the spot after Ben Chilwell’s lunge on Tino Livramento that was about as stonewall a penalty as you’ll see this weekend. Ward-Prowse then had a lunge himself on substitute Jorginho and was red-carded after a VAR check, he couldn’t have too many complaints.

After successive defeats to Man City and Juventus, Tuchel switched things up and handed starts to four of the five players who came on in the second half of the Juventus defeat in midweek with Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Chalobah and Chilwell all starting the game.
