Countless blocks and playing on the front foot, this was Kalidou Koulibaly's best display in a Chelsea shirt... he has not hit the heights since joining from Napoli but with a point to prove, this was a timely reminder of his quality

It was not just the Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Champions League decision that was a significant one for Graham Potter. He also had to pick which of his many January signings to disappoint and leave out too.

Not all of Chelsea's January additions could be included as there were only three available spaces for new faces.

And it was little surprise that attackers Joao Felix and Mykhailo Mudryk plus British record buy Enzo Fernandez were at the front of the queue leaving £35m centre back Benoit Badiashile as one of the players to miss out.

Given the juggling act Potter had to do to make the numbers work Badiashile being overlooked for Chelsea's three marquee winter arrivals was not a surprise.

But that did not mean it was a choice without potential to backfire.
