After a deal in the summer fell through, Arsen Zakharyan claimed that discussions over a move to Chelsea have reopened. As Todd Boehly sought to improve the team's midfield options, the 19-year-old wonderkid was extensively connected with a transfer to Stamford Bridge.
Gianluca Di Marzio claims that the Blues made an offer for the young star in August. Pavel Andreev, Zakharyan's agent, confirmed that his client was close to signing a contract with the west Londoners while speaking to RB Sport, as reported by SportsKeeda.
According to reports, Chelsea intended to rapidly complete a deal and activate the Russian international's £12.6 million release clause. However, the club soon ran into a number of issues that ultimately led to the breakdown of discussions.
Due to British sanctions placed on Russia, saw by tribalfootball, the youngster was asked for an update on his future. He said: "I don't think about it now. You can ask the club, my representatives. I think it's all right. Negotiations are underway. But I will not reveal all the cards."
Zakharyan is hopeful of joining Chelsea in January. Speaking to the Evening Standard in September, he said: "There was an offer, but it just didn't work out. You probably know the reasons.
"How could I refuse? Of course, I agreed [to the move]. I hope everything will be fine, perhaps [it will happen] in the winter [window]. Of course, the level there is much higher than in the Russian Premier League, but everything is possible. Maybe it would work there. I could always go on loan."
