According to journalist Simon Phillips, N'golo Kante and Chelsea have not yet reached an agreement on a new contract.
Although he stated that the Frenchman still desired to remain with the club, it has been reported that the two parties had yet to reach an agreement on terms.
Despite the quality he undoubtedly possesses, injuries have made it likely that he is in his final season with the team.
Kante missed the rest of the season before the World Cup after suffering another muscular injury against Tottenham in just the second game of the campaign.
A fresh setback prevented him from competing in the international tournament this winter just when it appeared like he could be close to recovering.
He is currently yet to appear for new manager Graham Potter.
Phillips has claimed that although both parties want the relationship to continue at Stamford Bridge, the distance between what they both want is currently too much to deal with.
He said: “Chelsea ideally want to keep N’Golo Kante, but the plan is to assess how fit he will be for the second part of the season when he returns from his injury. Kante happy to stay, but parties are way off on terms as of now.”
As well as Kante, there have currently been no advancements on agreeing on a new contract with fellow midfielder Jorginho.
There are reportedly fears that the Italy international is winding down his contract in West London in order to secure a move back to Serie A next summer.
The club are linked with signing a number of midfield options next year, including Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham. With the quality of players they could be set to lose, replacing them adequately should be high on the list of priorities.
