Chelsea keep a close eye on 22-year-old Dutch defender

Chelsea lead the battle to add Matthijs de Ligt in the summer transfer window. The Netherlands international is also a target for Barcelona, Real Madrid and a gamut of other English clubs. Matthijs has emerged as a viable long-term target for the Blues.

De Ligt stays one of the most highly-rated young defenders in Europe despite making slow progress at Juventus since his arrival from Ajax in summer 2019. The 22-year-old centre-back’s stint in Turin has coincided with the Bianconeri’s downturn in fortunes, but he has remained one of their better performers.

The Dutch defender has turned out 117 times for the Old Lady while chipping in with eight goals and three assists. But the Italian club are in a spot of bother over the Dutchman’s long-term future amid increasing interest from some of the most high-profile clubs in Europe, including Barcelona, Real Madrid and Chelsea.

Barcelona and Real Madrid have fallen behind in the battle to add the former Ajax midfielder, with Chelsea in the pole position to secure his services. Chelsea are desperate to strengthen their central defensive unit following the departures of Barcelona target Christensen and new Real Madrid centre-back Rudiger.

Apart from Barcelona and Real Madrid, Liverpool, Man City, and Man United also trail Chelsea in the battle to add Matthijs de Ligt. As for Real Madrid, the continued interest in Matthijs de Ligt is somewhat perplexing, considering Rudiger arrives from Chelsea in a Bosman move this summer.
