Chelsea cannot let Ian Maatsen go cheap as they did with so many talents last summer

Chelsea appear to be well-stocked at left back, with Ben Chilwell returning from injury, Emerson Palmieri returning from loan, and Marcos Alonso remaining on the books.

Ian Maatsen was another left back loaned out this season, to Coventry, where he performed admirably. He should now be a part of the first team, rather than being cast aside like so many others before him.

Rumours earlier in the week linked Maatsen with a return to his homeland of Holland to play for Feyenoord, but Chelsea must hold out against the temptation to cash in on another young talent.

The smart decision here is obvious – sell Alonso, keep Emerson, and promote Maatsen to third choice.

As we saw this year, that means he’s only one injury away from regular game time, and he can play plenty in the cups.

If he’s willing to accept that role for a year, it’s the move to make.
