Liverpool Carabao Cup final vs Chelsea referee confirmed and it could be good news

Stuart Attwell will referee Liverpool's Carabao Cup final against Chelsea later this month - and could be a lucky charm for the Reds.

Attwell has been chosen to take charge of the Wembley showpiece on Sunday, February 27, with Darren England the VAR.

The Reds were last involved in a game with Attwell in charge in December, when he awarded Mohamed Salah a penalty the Egyptian converted to earn a 1-0 win over Aston Villa at Anfield.

However, Liverpool supporters were unhappy with the overall performance of the official, who also helmed the 3-3 draw at Brentford earlier this season.

That said, of the 15 occasions Attwell has been the referee, the Reds have lost only once - a 2-0 League Cup defeat at Leicester City in September 2017. Liverpool have won nine, with five draws.

By contrast, Chelsea have won only four of the 14 games they have been involved in with Attwell in charge.

England, meanwhile, was the VAR at the recent FA Cup game against Cardiff City where the visitors had an appeal for a penalty ignored while Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher was later not red-carded for a foul outside the penalty area.

He was also in the role for Liverpool's win at Burnley on Sunday when Salah had claims for a spot kick after being caught by Wout Weghorst.
