Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel opens up on Kai Havertz 'nerves' after Club World Cup winner

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel said it was clear Kai Havertz would be nervous ahead of his Club World Cup final penalty. The midfielder scored his extra time spot-kick to win the showdown event for the Blues.

Romelu Lukaku put Chelsea ahead following a drab first half. The Belgian’s powerful header from Callum Hudson-Odoi’s cross found the top corner.

Raphael Veiga equalised from the penalty spot to take the game into extra time.

A penalty shootout appeared likely before Chelsea were awarded a spot-kick of their own in the 116th minute.

Havertz – whose Champions League final-winning goal is the reason Chelsea were in this competition – confidently stroked the resultant kick into the corner.

And Tuchel later said it was normal that Havertz would feel nervous while stepping up to take an important penalty.

“The penalty doesn’t look nervous but of course he was nervous. He knows what was at stake. He has a good record in shooting. I’m happy for him,” Tuchel said.
