Chelsea have been the spending sensation this January transfer window, splashing out £323 million on a host of new talent.
While fans have been enjoying every moment, it has been difficult for fans of other clubs to watch the west London side spend so frivolously. Especially if you are an Arsenal fan who saw two transfer targets, Mykhailo Mudryk and Joao Felix, head to west London after being linked with moves to north London.
But Arsenal fans are enjoying life at the moment. Top of the league by five points and with a game in hand over Manchester City in second place, and on track to win a first league title in 20 years. Chelsea, meanwhile, are languishing in 10th despite spending a fortune.
Chelsea ended the transfer window last night by finally agreeing on a deal with Benfica to sign Enzo Fernandez for a British transfer record of £105 million. The Blues had pursued the midfielder for most of January after the Argentinian won the Best Young Player award at the 2022 World Cup.
It takes Chelsea’s spending since Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali took control of the club to over £600 million. And Morgan was keen to remind Chelsea fans of the reality they find themselves in despite last night’s elation.
