Chelsea Round-Up: Battle for French defender, Transfer blow, Replacement for Kante

Chelsea transfer target Jules Kounde reportedly has his eyes on a summer switch to La Liga giants Barcelona from Sevilla.

The France international has been a key player for Julen Lopetegui’s side since arriving from Bordeaux in 2019 and all summer long has been rumoured with a switch to Stamford Bridge.

Kounde won the 2019-20 Europa League with Sevilla and has already played 133 games for the team in all tournaments, founding back of the net nine times and providing three assists.

The 2021-22 campaign saw Kounde register three goals and an assist in 44 appearances to help Sevilla maintain a title challenge in the Spanish top-tier, where he stayed after Chelsea’s failed attempts to secure his services earlier last summer.

Following Todd Boehly’s successful takeover, the Blues have been expected to reignite their interest in French centre-back, whose deal with Sevilla ends in two years’ time.

However, the Blues could ultimately concede loss in the race for Kounde, who is now a top transfer target for Barcelona.

The report suggests that Sevilla will not stand in Kounde’s way of departing from the club if the right offer arrives, however, Barcelona can still expect to be quoted as much as €65m (£55.8m) for the 23-year-old centre-back.
